Statement of Purpose

The Mitchellville School of Mathematics, Science, & Technology, a state certified independent/private school, offers a rigorous academic program for Pre Kindergarten through 8th (PreK-8) grade students who exhibit academic promise and who will thrive in a challenging learning environment. While the curriculum will emphasize key content areas, it will vary from traditional instruction by its expanded study and opportunities for personalized learning and enrichment. When appropriate, an integrated, thematic approach will be utilized. Students learn in unusually small classes that reflect traditional or mixed-age or multi-age vertical (e.g., PreK-K, 1-2, 2-3, etc.) grouping models. We believe that multi-age grouping provides for a wide range of abilities, allows for varying rates of development/progress, and nurtures individual emotional/social needs.

Students learn the importance of “living by The Mitchellville School Creed,” which was developed to promote character development and good citizenship. Each day, our students recite the following creed.

I am a student of The Mitchellville School
I am responsible, honest, respectful of myself, others, and property, and I follow the rules.
Everyday I do my best and learn something new, because that is what all students of
The Mitchellville School must do!

Students are expected to internalize and “live by” the tenants (e.g., responsibility, honesty, respect etc.) of the creed within the school community and beyond. In addition, students develop solid skills in key content areas (i.e., mathematics, science, language arts and social studies), as well as art, music, physical education, Spanish and technology (computer skills). The highlights of our curriculum include its strong integrated mathematics, science, and technology studies. Optional services provided through our Extended Day School program include instrumental (i.e., violin, piano, etc.) music and chess. All music instruction is provided through our school's partnership with the Mitchellville Community School of the Arts, a separate not-for-profit corporation. Library/science instructional resources and materials and research through Internet access extend learning experiences. All students have regular, daily access to computers. Throughout the year, students are exposed to exciting career opportunities in mathematics, science, and technology/computer, as well as other interesting career fields.

The instructional day is organized so that sufficient time is allocated to each area and a balanced, integrated complete program is implemented. Teachers tailor instruction to capitalize on moments when students demonstrate readiness or curiosity regarding a relative or higher skill. Each teacher's recognition of individual needs is evident through his or her implementation of multiple grade-level plans at any given time.

The Mitchellville School curriculum includes skills that will be taught in subject areas across current grade levels. Woven into our curriculum are learner outcomes that are relatively consistent with the Maryland State Content Standards or Maryland Learning Outcomes.
